Apps of the Week

Welcome back! Let's get right into the Droid & Apple Apps of the week!

Android: This week I wanted to let you guys know about this particular app. The name of this app is SoundHound. I know that Shazam is out there but I feel that this one does a better job. What SoundHound basically does is tell you the name of a song you are unfamiliar with. Let's say you are listenning to the radio and a song you really like is playing and you can't wait for the DJ to tell you the name and artist/s of the song. All you do is go to this app, tap on the button, and let SoundHound listen to the song. Within a few seconds, SoundHound has the name of the song and the artist ready for you as well as a link to a youtube video featuring this particular song. But let's say you couldn't reach your phone on time to turn on SoundHound to listen to your song. You can then either sing the song or hum it into your phone and SoundHound will find it. Check out the video below to see an example of SoundHound in action.

SoundHound can be found in the Android Market and be downloaded for free.

Apple: As if it wasn't easy enough to stay connected to your digital world already, Facebook has now created a messenger app that gives you instant access to messages from friends and family on Facebook. In my opinion it's a blessing and curse. You can never escape Facebook now. I guess it's all up to the user in this case. Simply put, it is SMS text a la Facebook.

Gamestop Has to STOP!

Please refer to Parnoid Android's post for further information on this topic. Gamestop is Stealing from their customers **UPDATE**

On the recent release of Deus Ex, a Square Enix title, Gamestop took the liberty of removing competitors' coupons that were inside the product's box. This was done for the PC version of the game. It was a $50 coupon to download and play another copy of the game for free via OnLive's cloud based network. Gamestop sent a letter to the employees instructing them to "Immediately remove and discard the OnLive coupon from all the regular PC versions of Deus EX Human Revolution." Gamestop has its own digital distribution platform and they were not on board in helping out the competition.

Here is an update from Giant Bomb's website of Square Enix apologizing to Gamestop: "As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third party coupon." said the company in the first part of the statement. "Gamestop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of Gamestop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies."

This not the first time Gamestop had problems with their customers. Just last year, Gamestop was hit with a class action lawsuit over their deceptive used-game sales.

I personally do not shop at Gamestop because of their company practices. It has been over 3 to 4 years since I last walked in to one of their stores. I'll tell you why:
#1. I do not like how their employees treat customers with their smug immature attitudes.
#2. There are never enough people working behind the counter to move the lines along.
#3. These so called "used games" are sometimes marked down to only 3 dollars off of the actual MSRP of new games AND they give you less then half of the price if you sell them your games.
#4. The numerous sales pitches of their employees. I just want to go in there, get the game, and get home ASAP to play what I just purchased.
#5. The smell of the actual store. I've been to many sites and they always have a damp water smell to them.
#6. Their slogan is a joke: "Power to the Players." Give me a break. What power?

This whole ordeal is just another reason why I'll never go back. When is it going to stop?

Excerpts from the first paragraph are from yahoo news.

Man of Steel's Costume is Missing Something...

Well, it was bound to happen. After seeing so many spoiler videos and pics on The Dark Knight Rises filming in Pittsburgh and Marvel's The Avengers filming in Cleveland, we are starting to see pics of the Christopher Nolan produced, Zack Synder directed Man of Steel. There have been some pics of a (highlight to read. spoilerish) a battle ravaged Smallville and damaged Kent Farm with Superman standing outside of it, but these new pics reveal the complete look of Henry Cavill as Superman sans red tights. I know. It's corny or comicbooky to wear your underoos on the outside, but, d'uh, it IS a comicbook movie. If there is one character who can pull it off, it is Superman. But this is not quite Superman. But then you need to see what DC is doing with their comics and their soft reboot of their universe.

In Honor of Steve Jobs Resigning

Thank you Steve Jobs for the iPad, iTouch, and iEverything else. In honor of your resignation, here is the slAPP app.

Thank you, Steve Jobs. Thank you.

Gamestop is Stealing From Their Customers **UPDATE**

When Deus Ex: Human Revolution launched, people who had bought the PC version received a free downloadable copy (via download code included with the physical copy) of the game for Onlive. Onlive is a gaming service that allows gamers to play games streamed while connected to the internet.

People who purchased the game from Gamestop claim that their copies have been opened and their codes have been removed from the box. There's even evidence that Gamestop did in fact intentionally remove these codes from every PC copy of the game that they have in stock.

Photos courtesy of Gamespy

A GameStop representative confirmed to GameSpy that the company is removing the codes, saying:
Square Enix packed the competitor's coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons.

**UPDATE** (3:30PM)
Gamespy contacted legal expert Eric Neigher (author of Gamespy's Objections!) who says:

Obviously, when one corporation tries to submarine another, and goes about it in a more or less shady way, it looks bad. But, from a legal perspective, a lot depends on what kinds of contracts OnLive had with Square, and in turn that Square had with GameStop. If removing this coupon from the PC boxes violated the terms of that contract, obviously GameStop is liable to be sued. If not, there's still an issue as to their responsibility to give purchasers what they expect to be paying for, including, perhaps, marketing materials.
Does Gamestop even have the right to remove content from the box? They don't even tell their customers on what they did. Square Enix decided to offer their consumers a free downloadable copy of the game.

**UPDATE** (5:00pm)

Gamestop started removing all PC copies from their stores in agreement with Square Enix.

Woah... Aliens!

I can't say that I'm a big fan of the Aliens movies. But this trailer for the SEGA made Aliens: Colonial Marines looks dope!

Salivating Item of the Day

These are Vanquish action figures made by Square Enix Play Arts Kai. Square Enix officially revealed these and other action figures at this year's Comic-Con. As a HUGE fan of the game, I must have these action figures! They look pretty damn well made. There is no release date for these figures yet and as for the price, I assume that they will cost around $50 - $60 (just like their other products). They've made other figures as well such as God of War, Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, and even Batman: Arkham City. But I just want these two guys: Sam Gideon and Bogey or Victor Zeitsev (or whatever they're gonna call the one in the red suit). All these figures are probably only going to be available in online stores like Play-Asia or Amazon and hopefully even in some Japanese toy stores here in the U.S.

Can Superman Be a Super Hero On the Web?

I guess the answer is: NO. Go ahead and chuckle already.

Loser: Literal Video Version

The Nineties was a great time for music. It produced many great bands and lots of different methods to compose a variety of melodies. Odd sounds came out of dirty guitar screeches; heck, even swing music was in style in those days. But Beck took the cake when it came to quirky, and funny loco tunes. Beck was one strange fellow and his music alone is proof enough of the level of weirdness that he possessed. But I believe that's why his music was so good. Sure his lyrics were different and sometimes incoherent, but with the power of the internet, I bring you the translation of one his most famous songs: LOSER.

Thanks to funnyordie.com and the tosh.0 blog for doing the hard work in finding such a gem of a video like this one.

Sidekick Countdown

Shadow. Companion. Call'em what you will. They are the ones that keep you company through thick and thin. Sidekicks. They hold your stash of grenades, the arsenal of batarangs, and that lucky double jump jet. Sure they might get hurt in the process in protecting you and your giant ego, but they'll do it with a victorious smile. Knowing that the town is safe and the job was done well is enough fuel for our little buddies of justice to go home proud.

Gametrailers very own screwattack crew gives us a countdown in sidekick 101. What it takes to be a great right hand man or woman. So take notes, because there will be a test after this instructional video.

Keep a Sharp Eye Out on Tango Gameworks' First Game

There isn't much info for Tango's first game aside for the fact that the project is being led by Shinji Mikami (Founder of Tango Gameworks), whose best known for creating the Resident Evil series and God Hand for Capcom as well as Vanquish when he worked for Platinum Games. That is enough to get me excited.

Here's some art work for their game:

I hope that they will reveal their game at the Tokyo Game Show this September.

Boogie Rant: Is "Edgier" and "Darker" the Answer?

When WB film group President Jeff Robinov said that he had plans to make a sequel to Green Lantern and that he intends to make it "edgier" and "darker," I thought to myself, Why? Not why is he making a sequel to GL? But why does it have to be "edgier" and "darker?" Is this some proven super secret formula to making a successful superhero movie?
