Marvel's Cost Cutting Ways Continue

Marvel has been doing a lot of cost cutting as of late.  They let go of several staff members and canceled several titles: Iron Man 2.0, All-Winners Squad, and Alpha Flight; terminated Victor Von Doom and Destroyers while they were in pre-production; canceled X-23, the last Marvel comic book to have a female as its lead (although there are rumblings that she will reappear in Avengers Academy); and today they announced that both Ghost Rider and Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive have also been canceled.

Whether or not these cancellations are indeed cost cutting efforts on Marvel's part to try to endear itself to Disney or if Disney is sending certain mandates to trim budget is unclear.  There is also the possibility that Marvel might just be working on rebooting their characters a la DC's New 52.  But these characters that had their series canceled just doesn't scream out "reboot."  These characters were already heading in an all new direction with a female Ghost Rider and Black Panther on a collision course with The Kingpin.  But then again, it is possible that everything is on the up & up and that it is all leading to a reboot or some grand Marvel plan.

"Yeah.  And monkeys might fly outta my butt."--Wayne Campbell

But, remember who **cough cough** Isaac "Ike" Perlmutter **cough cough** the true villain mastermind is behind all these cancellations and firings.

8Bit•Rewind- Robotech

Every once in a while I get nostalgic and I want to take a look back at some of the things that I used geek out at.  Today is such a day.  Probably one of the best reasons to love the internet, and more specifically Youtube, is because you can easily to look back.

Today's 8Bit•Rewind is Robotech:

Hands down, my favorite cartoon of all time was Robotech. This clip above says it all. Awesome visuals, great storytelling, drama, great soundtrack and giant robot dog-fighting.  If you haven't had a chance to check out Robotech ever, take a look around Youtube or pick up the dvd collection.  But if you have I hope this video brought back a little bit of nostalgia from your youth.

Snow White and the Huntsman Trailer

Here's the trailer to Snow White & the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart (Twilight movies), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and Charlize Theron (Monster).  It looks a heck of a lot better than the upcoming movie Mirror Mirror starring Julia Roberts .

Here's the 2nd red band trailer for Jonah Hill's upcoming movie The Sitter.  It has the same vibe as Adventures in Babysitting but raunchier.

PSN Schedules Maintenance on NOV 17th

The PSN will be shut down tomorrow for approximately 14 hours for scheduled maintenance, from 8am to 10pm Pacific Standard Time (PST).  That's great for me since I usually watch the NBC comedy line up at that time.

The Playstation blog explains all the details here.

Trailer to Mirror Mirror

Um... Well, here's the trailer to Julia Roberts' latest movie Mirror Mirror, a take on the classic Snow White story.  Honestly, you don't need a mirror to tell you that this movie isn't going to be the fairest of them all.  But I'll let you watch the trailer and have you make your own opinion on it.

PETA Vs. Mario **UPDATE**

PETA-- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals-- is attacking everybody's favorite hero plumber. PETA is stating that by Mario wearing the "tanooki suit," he is actually promoting the skinning and wearing of tanuki fur. A tanuki is a real life raccoon dog that are "beaten and skinned alive for their fur."

Nintendo, which has just released Super Mario 3D Land, first introduced the tanooki suit in 1988's Super Mario Bros. 3. Mario would have to obtain the leaf item in order to gain the tanooki suit and the abilities that come by wearing it.

See? Mario uses a leaf to get into the tanooki suit. He doesn't skin a live tanuki and wear its fur. Furthermore, I don't get the urge to skin my dog (or any living creature for that matter) and wear its fur.

I understand what PETA tries to do for animal rights and it can be commendable at times (some of their tactics leave something to be desired). But this is really stretching it. I've played Super Mario 3 many times and never had the the slightest gumption of skinning a tanuki-- or a frog for that matter. PETA might just have to change its focus on something more prevalent than a video game mascot wearing a fictional tanooki suit. I know. Why don't you guys focus on the way innocent plants are being torn out of the ground to feed you guys? PETA, you need to pick a different fight on this one. Your argument is pretty slim and ridiculous.

Needless to say, Nintendo has yet to comment.

So, what do you think? Am I off on this one and PETA is right to fear that Mario is an animal skinning, fur wearing propaganda used to trick our youths into hurting animals and wearing fur?

UPDATE 8:50 PM  (Thanks to Paranoid Droid for the update heads up!)

Nintendo had this to say about PETA's claims:
"Mario often takes the appearance of certain animals and objects in his games,"
"These have included a frog, a penguin, a balloon and even a metallic version of himself. These lighthearted and whimsical transformations give Mario different abilities and make his games fun to play.
"The different forms that Mario takes make no statement beyond the games themselves."

Bruce Wayne's Medical File

I found this and I wanted to share.  Here is Bruce Wayne's medical file and it is a very interesting read!  Enjoy!  Much thanks to Russell Saunders for such a great write up!

[By special request]
Patient: Wayne, Bruce
DOB: 2/16/1971
Occupation: Industrialist
Insurance: Self-pay
Emergency Contact: Dick Grayson, XXX-269-9637
Interval History:  Patient was seen for his last annual physical approximately one year ago.  Since that time he has had numerous visits for acute illnesses or injuries, generally accompanied either by his companion Mr. Grayson or Alfred, a senior member of his household staff.  These recent maladies appear to be in keeping with the pattern that has emerged over the past several years, in which significant medical problems are associated with odd or incongruous explanations.  Most recently, patient was seen for numerous areas of lower extremity cutaneous blistering, erythema and thickening, consistent with moderate to severe frostbite.  Patient had reportedly gotten lost while camping in the mountains, but could not account for how he had sustained these injuries in mid-August.
Past Medical History:  As stated, patient has a somewhat lengthy and complicated medical history, best summarized by system –

Batman: Arkham City Game REVIEW

Watching Batman: The Animated Series as a boy always made me wonder how a regular human with no special abilities was capable of taking down super villians with his mere wit (and of course, his array of very handy gadgets). With such a good story plot, many game companies that clearly lacked the love in the subject matter tried and failed to make give us a decent Batman gaming experience.  This was mostly due to the fact that these IP's were rushed to meet a release of a blockbuster motion movie picture.

The Dark Knight Rises: And That's a Wrap!

And that's a wrap!  After six months of shooting in India, Scotland, England, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and New York, Christopher Nolan's final Batman film The Dark Knight Rises has completed filming.  Now all we have is the long wait until TDKR releases on July 20, 2012, as Nolan and company work on putting the finishing touches on what is surely ("don't call me Shirley") to be an epic movie.

Remember that a six minute prologue will be attached to the IMAX version of Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol in December if you want to get an early TDKR fix.

Immortals - The 8bitSpit Review

I don't know what made me go buy tickets to this flick.  Honestly the commercials and trailers didn't do much for me.  Tarsem Singh isn't a director i can say that i follow much.  He has a nice visual style but not something I get amped up to see. But there I was at the theater plopped down to watch Immortals.  I went into it not expecting much... actually if truth be told, I was expecting a campy, special effects, Greek god, slo-mo flick.

Basically that's what I got, but it wasn't a disappointment.

Immortals tells the story of King Hyperion's (played by the devilishly good Mickey Rourke) violent crusade to destroy Zeus by releasing the Titans, and Theseus' (Henry Cavill) quest to stop him.  Oh yeah and it has the lovely Freida Pinto in it as the virginal oracle, Phaedra.  That's pretty much all you need to know story-wise.

Immortals seems like a sequel to 300 in many ways.   What you liked in 300 is in Immortals, but a tick behind it because it's been done before. The big speeches, the slo-mo decapitations, shirtless dude with 6 packs....all in here.   The difference is Cavill is not Gerard Butler.  It's not a bad thing. I loved 300, and while this movie isn't 300 its not bad either.

It's a good time. I don't think it's a flick that you will buy for your Blu-Ray collection, but it's a good entertaining film.
