Boogie Thoughts: Chuck Series Finale *SPOILERS*

Honestly, this wasn't the strongest season of Chuck and it's tough to say that because you would like a show that you have invested five years in following and liking the characters and wondering what is going to happen next.  But the two-part series finale (Chuck Versus Sarah and Chuck Versus the Goodbye) really brought back the charm, the wit, and the action that made Chuck a fan favorite and and one of my favorite shows of all time.   Chuck was brought back to basics and it really worked.  I can't talk about the series finale without spoiling it for you, so with that in mind, LEAVE NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! Consider yourself aptly warned.  More after The Jeffster Blaze of Glory music video.

Young Justice Returns in March!

Cartoon Network will start showing  new episodes of Young Justice starting Saturday, March 3, at 10:30 A.M.  The new episode is titled "Misplaced" and is described as "When every adult on the planet disappears, only the team (of) Zatanna and Billy Batson are left to defeat the five most powerful sorcerers on Earth."  Green Lantern: The Animated Series will also be returning the same day with the first half of the series premiere episode playing at 10:00 A.M.  Is this the beginning of DC Nation block on Cartoon Network?

If you haven't seen Young Justice at all, do yourself a favor and try finding the earlier episodes and catch up.  You are doing yourself a disservice by not watching this show.  It is a fun, smart, beautifully drawn action-packed show with great renditions of these popular DC characters.

8bit Song of the Day: B-Sides #04

So I commandeered #8bitSongoftheDay from Raurik because I had to put this up.  Tonight is the Chuck two-hour series finale so what better way to say good-bye to Chuck, Sarah, Casey, Morgan and the rest of Chuck's gang than by an 8bit version of the Chuck theme song Short Skirt/Long Jacket by Cake.  Enjoy!

Don't worry.  Raurik will be back with the #8bitSongoftheDay!

Street Fighter X Tekken Announcing PS3 & Vita Exclusive Characters

-video courtesy of pixel enemy

This is quite possibly the greatest reveal ever.

The New Xbox Will Be Six Times as Powerful (Speculation)

Oban is the code name for the new System on a Chip (Soc) for the upcoming Wackbox, I mean Xbox. Tech Site Fudizilla states that this chip has been in production since late December of 2011, and are being produced by both IBM and Global Foundries for Microsoft.  This PowerPC CPU combined with the ATI Southern Islands GPU will be a modified 7000 Series card.  The first batch of 32nm Oban chips will be used mainly for developer consoles.  This leads me to believe the next Xbox might be out late 2012.

But don't go pre-ordering your Xbox 720 (also codenamed the Loop) at your local Best Buy just yet. These are all just rumors.  Plus, let's be honest here. Microsoft's reputation in making shoddy machines will definitely make me more cautious to rush out and get one on day one.  I won't be a lemming again and be short of possibly 400-500 bucks.  I've learned my lesson.

More Wii U News - Release Date and Possible Name Change

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said that the Wii U will be released this holiday season just in time for Christmas.

source: reuters

Nintendo says that their new console, the Wii U, could be renamed before E3. They want to avoid public confusion just like the 3DS in which people thought that the DS and the 3DS are the same thing. Nintendo has already stated that they will re-unveil their console at this year's E3 in order to show off what it can do instead just showing off the new controller.

I hope they do change the name because "Wii U" is a such a stupid name.

8bit Song of the Day #12

Welcome back to #8BitSongOfTheDay! Today's title comes from another Gameboy game, but this time a popular one! The titular Super Mario Land 2! The Star Maze theme. What can I say about this level but that it was one of the worst levels in a platformer I've ever had to suffer through and yet I couldn't stop playing it cause the song was so awesome.

This video only barely does the difficulty of this level justice. The stars are very easy to hit and Mario doesn't stay up for very long, often taking several jumps before his decent has been stopped. On top of that Mario slides everywhere. And once you finally do get through this death trap of angry stars you have to face the boss, whose damage box (his weak spot) is almost impossible to hit. You have to be 100% in place or he hits you instead. I thought my copy of this game was broken when I got to him because I was unable to position myself over him just right. I ended up being too close to his face so when he came up, I went down to my death. Even with all of this, I would still say this was my favorite level from the game, solely because of the music.

The CW's Arrow's Character Breakdown

The TV Addict got a hold of the CW's character breakdown for Arrow, their Green Arrow show.  You can pretty much tell by reading the descriptions that Arrow will not have any ties to Smallville which means Justin Hartley will not be returning as Star City's Emerald Archer.  But we can now start speculating and have fun trying to cast each character.  And with that, read the character breakdown.  Who do you think would be good for the part?

Paranoid Game Review: Bayonetta

Bayonetta is an original IP developed by former Capcom developer Hideki Kamiya (Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Okami) and his team at Platinum Games, Team Little Angels, and in collaboration with Sega. It is also Kamiya's first game since Okami (2006) for the PS2. Bayonetta plays much like Devil May Cry except it is much faster and more intense. They succeeded on making the greatest action game ever created.

8bit Song of the Day #11

Welcome back to #8BitSongOfTheDay! This time we're really getting oldschool. Today's song is from the relatively unknown Ninja Gaiden Shadow! Though some felt this title was too far of a departure from the original, I felt it gave the series one thing it desperately needed, the ability to organize itself. Gone are all the millions of useless special abilities, including the overpowered one, and here is what the NES and Gameboy did best, jump, attack, and a power-up if you've got it. One long, well planned level for you to find your way through, and enemies setup to make you think about your approach rather than charge in. This title, as well as it's Game Gear cousin, were not very well received and were thusly lost to the ages.

SoCal King of Fighters XIII Tournament This Weekend

This weekend on January 28th over at Super Arcade, Level|Up will be hosting the KoF NEO MAXX 3v3 tournament! Some of the best talent in the states will be over there and you can probably expect to see legends like Mr.KoF himself present as well as the SoCal Regional champ, B.A.L.A. It is a mere $5 event fee to go check it out so do yourself a favor this Saturday and head on over to the Super Arcade for an amazing throwdown.

What makes this event so amazing is this is a 3 on 3 event so it will be one character per player and they will be locked into their character from start of the tournament to finish so no cheap cross picking, only good old fashioned, honest fighting. In my opinion this will be one of the best KoF tournaments until EVO so don't miss your chance to be there!

If you're like myself and lack the ability to cross the country to be there you can watch the entire event for free on Level|Up's stream on here.

Super Arcade is located at the following address and the event will begin at 5PM western!
1121 N. Grand Ave
Walnut, CA 91789

8Bit Song of the Day #10

Welcome back to #8BitSongOfTheDay! I'm afraid there was a temporarily forced hiatus as I fight to stay on top of everything, but fear not! The #8BitSongOfTheDay is back with new vigor! So with that said, let's talk about someone that doesn't actually do 8-bit music! It has come time to give light to the artist who gave us one of the best game music scores to come out of 2011, C418. It just so happens that C418 has a chiptuney song on his most recent album, Seven Years of Server Data.

It is seldom that I will ever get the chance to take a moment to talk about C418 on #8BitSongOfTheDay, but I'd at least like to take the time to really encourage you to travel to his bandcamp page here and check out some of his albums. Many of them are free and almost all of them are on a "pay what you want" system. I highly advise picking up Seven Years of Server Data once you've become more familiar with C418's "unique" style. It is one of his more fun albums, but the experience can be somewhat abrasive if you're not ready for something different. It comes off as tastefully brash, yet honest. Which is funny, as that's how I'd describe C418 himself. To start you off I'd suggest Little Things and the Minecraft album. Circle is another beautiful album. 72 Minutes of Fame was noticeably dancier, but good. Then again, who cares what I think, this is your mine full of musical discoveries. So get your diamond pickaxe and lay it gently across the vinyl as you dig deep into C418's unique world, created for himself, but experienced by many.

Rumor: Rocksteady is making a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game posted a rumor of Rocksteady Studios' (Batman: Arkham City) next game is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They have no real source as to where they got this information from but this is what they've got on the game so far:
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Manhattan Crisis is the alleged name of the title.
- Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo are the four playable characters, each with their own varied move set and weapon of choice (sword, bo staff, sai, and nunchucku…respectively).
- Flashbacks are played as Master Splinter/Hamato Yoshi.
- Shurikens, smoke bombs, grappling hooks, and climbing foot spikes.
- Gameplay and story/stage progression similar to Batman: Arkham City.
- Classic characters such as Bebop and Rocksteady (warthog and rhinoceros), Dr. Baxter Stockman, Shredder (Oroku Saki), and Krang act as bosses and in the case of the humans-turned-mutants, you fight them in both forms throughout the story.
- The Turtle Van and Turtle Blimp will be present and with them and other gadgets, the Wii U build is expected to have touch screen controls for specific actions.
- Multiplayer is unknown.
- Graphics engine used is that of Arkham City.
- The game is expected to be more dark than slapstick, but the turtles themselves and their interactions with the Foot Clan, bosses, and story characters like April O’Neil and Casey Jones will still have comedy attached.
- Purportedly being in development for Wii U, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
- Careful selection of voice actors to bring the universe to life as well as Rocksteady did with their two Batman games.
- Manhattan Crisis shares a similar name to the 1991/1992 NES title, “The Manhattan Project”, but is very much its own title.

Close Up of Cavill as Superman with Young Superfan

We haven't really gotten much of the way of official pics from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel other than the dark official pic.  And we have gotten spy pics from everyone from Superman, Zod & Co., to Lois Lane.  But this pic is pretty cool.  During filming a couple of days back in Chicago, a young fan was able to get a nice close up pic of him and Henry Cavill as Superman.  How cool is that?!

8bit Song of the Day: B-Sides #03

This isn't the regular #8bitSongoftheDay that Raurik puts up and that you are accustomed to but I was listening to some Tom Petty earlier today and it got me wondering if there was someone who had "8-bit-ified" any of his songs.  Sure enough, YouTuber STEPHERZZZZZZZZZ  did such that and turned Petty's Free Fallin' into a pretty neat sounding 8bit song.  It sounds like an ending to a game where you have slayed the dragon and saved the princess and everything is alright in the world-- that is until the princess is kidnapped once again and it's up to you to find and rescue her again.  Give a listen and enjoy!

8BitSpit Rant: Response

I thought it would be fun to mix things up and offer a counter-argument to Skuhl Leader's 8BitSpit rant on the abundance of FPS titles on the market. I was hoping this would help spawn intelligent and insightful discussion here on 8BitSpit in the comments section.

This is an all too familiar argument for me. I got the exact same opinion piece from my girlfriend after I went on a fighting game binge. I think this is something that falls under the eye of the beholder rule. Ultimately, unless you're really into and involved in a genre, chances are that you're not going to notice the variances from one breed to the next. And, wouldn't we all like a new Mega Man that was as awesome as the originals? Well, the truth is we don't all want it. There's a pretty large portion of gamers that will look at Mega Man 10 and see it as a cash-in, only to turn around and buy Call of Duty: Black Ops.

I feel that one of the biggest announcements to watch for this year is a FPS, Half Life 3. This is for the same reason that when it comes to fighters the world watches for Street Fighter. It's not that there is anything wrong with King of Fighters or Call of Duty. It is because  Half Life and Street Fighter are the trend setters. When Valve releases the first gameplay trailer for Half Life 3, pay attention because you will be seeing what everyone else will be doing for the next 5 years. That is not to say that the other titles in the genre lack originality or innovations of their own, but that Half Life and Street Fighter are the blocks from which other genre defining games build on.

On a more personal note, I agree that the market does seem flooded with FPS games. To make matters worse, the genre has never been a favorite of mine. On the other hand, like all good things, this too will fade away into another genre as the medium we play these games on begins to change. Just look at the PS Vita. Of their launch lineup there are only two or three FPS titles. As for fighters, we got just as many new titles as FPS this year. Arcade Edition, UMVC3, KoFXIII, Skull Girls, and to top it off we have Tekken Tag Tournament, Soul Calibur 5, and Street Fighter X Tekken to look forward to next year.

It all goes back to the idea that you can't enjoy a painting when looking through a magnifying lens. I know sometimes it can be frustrating to hunt down E3 or Comic-Con's new footage, only to find dozens of FPS trailers and the occasional indie title on display, but that's where I see us stepping in. It is up to us, the journalists, to not only show the audience what they want, but also to show them what they missed, what they never knew they'd like, and what they never even imagined could be.

8BitSpit Rant: Less First-Person-Shooters Please!

As we begin every year I look forward to what this year will bring such as my hopes and resolutions for the upcoming year and such. Besides my own personal goals for the year, I'm looking forward to what each of the big three companies will have in store for this year. Last year was a big year for the video game industry with so many great games released. With the possible reveal of the PS4, Xbox 720 and, of course, the WiiU, 2012 is looking like a big year too.

While I am salivating at the thought of a new generation of games on the horizon, I want to make one thing clear:

Less first person shooters please!

It really is too much already.

It might just be me, but it feels like for every platform, puzzle, sports, action, etc. game out there, 5 first-person-shooters come out. My buddy ralfsterr, god bless him, but he loves Battlefield so much. I get it too, it's a slick looking game. Real cool graphics, responsive controls, cool battles and all. He says it's much better than Call of Duty. He might be right. But to me, Battlefield looks exactly like Modern Warfare, which looks like any other number of FP: a hand with a gun on the screen, switch out soldiers for aliens, or Nazis or zombies. It's the same crap over and over again. Ugh. I don't get it. Really. Don't get me wrong. Their have been some FPS that I have enjoyed playing like the O.G. Halo and Gears of War. But after a while they seem to all feel the same.

The difference between some of these games are very slight. The developers push the new gaming engine, better more destructive weapons, cooler more violent blood bath mechanics, realistic gun sounds, and greater machinery. And guess what? I don't care. I really don't care. It's just a hand on the screen with a gun, like every other FPS.

There are very many imaginative developers out there and I wish to see what would happen if they just let loose more often and did more than FPS. I don't know if this a western-developer thing to make FPS games or if it's a so called "hardcore gamer" thing, but in my opinion it blows. I don't want to be lumped into the "hardcore gamer" moniker if all I get to play is FPS from here on out.

The worst part though is that there are too many of us out there that keep plopping $50 or more every time an FPS comes out. So the industry isn't going to stop making them so long as all us sheep keep buying each of these games and their sequels. So I guess I am trying to appeal to the public and to developers to give us something new and slow down the FPS onslaught of games.

Less First-Person-Shooters Please!

--Skuhl Leader
