Matthew Vaughn is Set to Return to Direct X-Men: First Class Sequel

Deadline is reporting that director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Layer Cake) will be returning to the X-Universe to direct the sequel to the surprisingly good X-Men: First Class.  Along with the return of Vaughn, Bryan Singer (X-Men, X2: X-Men United, Superman Returns) will return as producer and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand, Jumper) penning the script.  No timetable has been given for for a release date let alone a starting date.

That's good news seeing how great and successful First Class was.

DC Entertainment Announces "Before Watchmen"

DC Entertainment announced that it will be revisiting Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's Watchmen universe with seven all new prequel stories inter-connecting and focusing on the original members of the Watchmen.

Says Dan Didio and Jim Lee:

"It's our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant. After 25 years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told. We sought out the best writers and artists in the industry to build on the complex mythology of the original."

As expected, Before Watchmen is going forward without Alan Moore's blessings:

"I tend to take this latest development as a kind of eager confirmation that they are still apparently dependent on ideas that I had 25 years ago.

"completely shameless."

Check out the all star writers and artists for each series in Before Watchmen along with images for each series.

True Confessions - I Never Beat Mike Tyson's Punch Out!

Ok I have been hiding my shame for years now and I have to get this off my chest.

I never beat Mike Tyson's Punch Out!

The original NES version of Punchout is one of my favorite games of all time.  It's such a well made game.  It's one of those game you could just throw on whenever you wanted and instantly get hooked.  It's a classic.

At the time the game was released Mike Tyson was a beast.  Not the lovable, goofy, oaf you see in comedies nowadays.  Naw man, Mike Tyson was probably the baddest dude on the planet in the late 80's.  His fights would last minutes (sometimes seconds) dismantling dudes bigger than him, leaving heavyweight after heavyweight seeing stars.  Getting a Tyson fight on pay-per-view was a risky proposition. On one hand, you could say you got your money's worth because you saw somebody get knocked out.  On the other hand the fight lasted less than the boxer introductions.  Come the following Monday morning after the fight, the main topic of conversation was about how bad did "Iron" Mike belt his opponent.  Nintendo couldn't have picked a better Boss for Punch Out.

Well I faced Mike on the NES, and got destroyed too.  Not even close.  My confession is that I had to use the cheat code to get to him.  I could never get there on my own.  Man, I could barely get past Bald Bull.  I don't know how to explain it.  When it came to Bald Bull, my thumbs and my brain just couldn't get it together quick enough to take the Bull down.  If you have played the game before you know that defeating each boxer is just a matter of finding out the punching pattern the boxer has.  From there you just have dodge and wait for your moment to strike. Well it's not like I don't know Bald Bull's sequences, I just couldn't react fast enough.  You know how sometimes when you are playing a beat'em up game and your excitement level gets the best of you and you just start button mashing? Yeah, that was me versus the Bald Bull. Ugh.

It really is pathetic. But I'm hopeful, that one of these days.....
I can't be the only one though.  Everybody has that one game (or two).  A game that for the life of you, no matter what you do, just pwns you.  Do you have a game you have never beaten?  Which one?  Comment below.

The Funniest Thing I Saw Today!

New TMNT Toys On The Way!

The Turtles are making a comeback to the small screen this fall on Nickelodeon.  Along with the comeback comes a new wave of TMNT action figures from Playmates.  MTV Geek got the scoop on these figures, and I gotta say they look pretty slick.  I like that each turtle has their own look. Gone are the figures that were solely differentiated by the color of their bandanas.  These new turtle figures are different heights, different skin colors, and have different facial expressions too.  Well done Playmates!

Voip to be Fixed on Battlefield 3 for the PS3

The Battlefield Blog is reporting that there would be VOIP fix on February 6th.  PLEASE, for all that is holy, I hope this issue is fixed.  FYI for all of you that are not up to speed with what VOIP stands for... well don't worry about the acronym word by word interpretation, but it's the feature in which you can communicate with others in an online game through a mic or a mic equipped headset.

As of now, it is hard to communicate with my fellow squad-mates, and it makes it tough to organize our online gameplay.  This Battlefield, is serious business folks and I need to get back to work with fully functioning tools.

KOF XIII 3v3 Level UP Tournament RECAP

At a quarter to 5pm, I made my way to the quiet city of Walnut, California, near Mount Sac College, to the Super Arcade.  Not expecting much, but to lose a couple of dozens of quarters on my favorite Street Fighter or bullet hell top down shooters.  Actually I did very little of that.  Instead I watched 10 Teams throwing down KOF style for roughly 3.5 hours.

Raurik (#8bitsongoftheday) was so right about how intense these tournaments can get.  I had a blast being in the same room with these high level players going at it in this 3v3 Tournament.

Arrow has Found its Emerald Archer

Deadline is reporting that the CW has cast Stephen Amell (Hung, The Vampire Diaries) as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in Arrow.

In the Warner Bros TV-produced project, described as a modern retelling of the story of DC Comics character Green Arrow, he will play the vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology under his secret identity as Oliver Queen, a wealthy playboy and billionaire industrialist-turned-outspoken politician in Star City.

I like the casting of Amell as Oliver Queen.  So far so good.  You can click HERE to see the character breakdown for Arrow.

8BitSpit Salutes: Adam Hughes

Adam Hughes has been around the comic book industry since 1987, and since that time he has slowly been building a rep for being one of the best comic book girl (cheesecake) artists around.  That would be selling him short.  He is a great artist.  Period.

There is a new Humble Bundle out now. This most recent iteration of the bundle allows you to not only have these games on Windows and Mac, but also on your Android! The games currently available for the bundle are World of Goo, Anomaly, Osmos, and EDGE. Given Humble Bundle's record though, there's a good chance more games will be added to the bundle near the end of the sale. The bundle will be running for the next two weeks and you can find the sale here.

Battlefield 3 ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not a big deal but if you are planning to participate in a Battlefield Team Battle extravaganza, you might want to wait till Wednesday.

There will be scheduled maintenance on January 31st from 12:00am PST - 3:00am PST.  This will affect the following platforms:  PC, PS3, and Xbox360.

I'm just going to avoid Battlefield 3 all together till Wednesday to avoid abrupt interruptions, plus I wonder what they'll be fixing?  The PS3 online experience needs a lot of fixing, mainly the audio communication between squad members.  Boy oh boy does that need some fixing.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Full Trailer

Boogie Movie Review: The Grey

The Grey
Directed by: Joe Carnahan
Release date: January 27, 2012
Starring:  Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo
Studio:  1984 Private Defense Contractors

If you go in to the theater thinking that The Grey is going to see Liam Neeson running around in the frozen wilderness kicking wolf ass, then you are completely wrong.  This film is anything but that.  It is more of a character study of Neeson's character Ottway who is in search of death early on, only to be hunted by death itself in the form of wolves.

8bit Song of the Day #13

#8BitSongOfTheDay is coming at you hard with some seriously pumped chiptunes! Prepare to have your face melted by one of the hardest boss themes you've ever heard. It's time for Hyperduck. The track of choice is Beautiful Savage. If this track alone doesn't tell you how hardcore this boss is, then go buy the game and find out the hard way cause today is one of those rare occasions where I can recommend an amazing  new soundtrack as well as the new game. The title is A.R.E.S: Extinction Agenda and it just came out a couple weeks ago. This game is an amazing platformer that is one part Mega Man X and one part Metroid. If you're a fan of the old SNES platforming action games then you would be doing yourself a disservice missing out on this amazing title. And did I mention the music? Hyperduck Soundworks is one of the best the indie game music scene has to offer and they shows what he's made of in this amazing soundtrack.

And how about one more for good luck.

You can find the OST (Original SoundTrack) here.
And you can find the game, A.R.E.S:Extinction Agenda, here.
